Culture is our differentiator

What does it take to improve health care in Indian Country?

I believe that an essential driver for change is recognition that culture is our differentiator and that it needs to permeate our policies and delivery system for true transformation to take place. We need to approach wellness from a community-based model built on relationships, to talk about wellness as an asset-based approach to health care rather than applying a strictly medical model. And consider that improved health outcomes will occur by adopting indigenous evaluation methodologies and incorporating them into national health performance measures with community input. Bringing a community into the health care discussion with medial providers offers innovative solutions that health care policy makers need to hear.
