Call to Hopi/Tewa Artists


THE HOPI TRIBE
COMMUNITY ART INITIATIVE

The Hopi Tribe is undertaking a major renovation of the Hopi Health Care Center (HHCC) through a 638-contract with the Indian Health Service. As part of this transformative project, the Hopi Tribe is committed to integrating Hopi art into the facility, recognizing the invaluable contribution of our artist community. The Hopi Tribe is pleased to partner with Melvin Consulting PLLC, a Hopi-founded and led firm, to facilitate the RFP process.

Eligibility Requirements: Enrolled Hopi/Tewa tribal members, 18 years of age and older.

As part of this, the Hopi Tribe is seeking art to be installed or displayed at the Hopi Health Care Center in any medium* that reflects the following

* The Hopi Tribe’s selection committee, following the original Hopi advisory committee, is not accepting katsina dolls or imagery for this project.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

  • Finalists will have the opportunity to meet with the Hopi Tribe selection committee, which consists of the renovation projects Principle Contract Oversight Team (PCOT), to learn more about the site and scope for the artwork.

  • The Hopi Tribe is partnering with Melvin Consulting PLLC to assist with the RFP process and manage the application/section process, installation and payment to selected artists.

  • All aspects of the site installation, including appropriate egress, any special foundation needs, lighting, etc., will be approved and coordinated by Melvin Consulting along with the construction/architectural teams.

  • The chosen artists will be invited to participate in a public celebration at the opening of the new construction at the HHCC.

  • The artist will allow Melvin Consulting to arrange and coordinate media coverage. 

  • The artist will allow Melvin Consulting to share social media postings during the creation, fabrication, and installation of the artwork(s).

 

ARTISTIC OBJECTIVES

  • Submit ideas to reflect the following theme: Suphelawkyàakyangw na’qalanwiskyàakyangw lolmat wuupat qatsit itam yesvani.
    English translation: By encouraging a state of good health and supporting each other, we live a long and fulfilling life. 

  • We are seeking original works of art for an indoor environment.

  • Art that educates and inspires community members and visitors.

  • Art that preserves Hopi's rich artistic traditions and culture for future generations.

  • Art that showcases and elevates the participating artists’ artistic excellence.

  • Approximately 20-25 artists will be selected for this initiative.

  • All art mediums will be considered* such as clay, wood, paintings (oil, watercolor, etc.), photography, murals, vinyl application, screens/panels, mosaics, basketry, quilts, textiles, sculptures, prints, stained glass, tiles and more.

  • The Hopi Tribe is seeking:

    • LARGE CENTRAL ART, for specific areas of the HHCC. This art will be utilized in larger areas such as waiting areas, the cafe, the conference center and will be installed by the artist. Large Central Art will aesthetically enhance the surrounding area and otherwise interact with its surrounding environment.

    • GENERAL ART, for other areas of the HHCC. These will be individual pieces of art purchased outright by the Hopi Tribe to be utilized and installed by Melvin Consulting along with the construction/architectural teams.

    • Works should be aesthetically palatable for a wide audience , capture attention, and engage our Hopi community

  • Artists can submit for consideration either LARGE CENTRAL ART and GENERAL ART, or BOTH, by indicating it in the application.

  • Artwork should be constructed of permanent, durable materials and preferably be as maintenance-free as possible.

  • Please do NOT use culturally sensitive material in your design. The selection team will refer to the Cultural Preservation Office for guidance.


BUDGET & PAYMENT

  • Payment for pieces will be based on the size, materials and scope of the piece.

  •  For payment, selected artists must have a Hopi Business License and will need to complete an IRS Form W-9. Artists will be responsible for all applicable taxes related to this income.

  • Selected artists for the LARGE CENTRAL ART will be provided $500.00 for material costs in advance of the art delivery. Material costs will be subtracted from their final payout.

  • Once the art is approved and received by the Hopi Tribe, the artist will be given final payment.

  • The total budget available for artists for this project is: $105,000.

  • The application is online; however, printed forms are available at the Hopi Education Endowment Fund office.

APPLICATION AND SUBMISSION OF PROJECT PROPOSAL

  • Complete and submit your application form by the stated deadline, which includes a 2-3 sentence description of the concept design for the art.

  • Art dimensions will be determined based on the installation space. Art may be of any medium but must meet quality standards.

  • Select the option of submitting an application for LARGE CENTRAL ART, GENERAL ART or BOTH.

  • There is no application fee.

  • Submit three sample art images in digital format of the artists’ (or team member's) original works (jpg, pdf, digital files). Only use a solid white or black background (no other background will be accepted) when taking photos of your art for submission, and only include one art piece per photo please.

  • Artist collectives or teams should prepare a single application for submission, including names and contact information for all team members. One artist must be listed as the primary artist on the application. All team members must be enrolled Hopi/Tewa tribal members, 18 years of age and older.

  • We ask that applicants complete a brief application that includes a 2-3 sentence statement on how their proposed art connects with the theme to accompany the three photos showing examples of their work.

Selected artists for LARGE CENTRAL ART will be contracted to complete art pieces and installation within a set timeframe based on the construction timeline.Some installations will begin immediately after selection and some later based on the construction timeline. Note: The HHCC renovation project is expected to be complete by late Summer 2025, so all art must be complete by then.

PROPOSED SELECTION PROCESS & SCHEDULE

This solicitation process is being undertaken to enable the Hopi Tribe to identify the appropriate work for commissioned installations and other art for this opportunity.

Submissions will be reviewed based on the following:

  • Artistic quality of proposed artwork.

  • Appropriateness of proposed artwork to the site and theme of the project.

  • Experience with installations for LARGE CENTRAL ART.

  • Permanence, durability, maintainability and use of high-quality materials.

  • Absence of hazards to the public.

  • Innovation in the use of materials and techniques.

Ability of the artist to create and install the artwork within the established time frame for LARGE CENTRAL ART. The GENERAL ART will be installed by Melvin Consulting and the construction/architectural teams; general art may require minor coordination with the artist.
